I haven't done it to the El Camino yet but I did this change to an 80 Malibu so that should be the same thing and you have to change about everything but it's not difficult---the worst part was getting the right size wheelcylinders for the brakes to be balanced and I cannot remember what I ended up using but I seem to recall getting some with a 3/4 inch diameter--I just can't quite remember it those were the last ones I got --but that ought to get you in the ballpark anyway----I did that in about 1986 so that is the reason for the memory problem----plus I am getting old..............Dan

I thought the 72 was too wide and needed narrowng---I believe the one I used was out of a 67 chevelleand even though it actually bolted up using the stock control arms the pinion angle was way wrong so I had to drill some foles closer together to get it right..............Dan

thanks, a co-worker told me that my '84 elcamino was based on a monte carlo, and i should look for a 12 bolt out of a mid 80s monte carlo ss. but i think i will take measurements and go to you-pull-it.

It is wider, so i picked up A set of Weld pro stars with a 5 1/2 back space, fits gr8!! as far as the lower control arms I picked up a set of control arms Relocation Brackets for a 12 bolt from UMI Performance Inc.
UMI Performance Inc
i had these on the 7.5 rearend and thay did the job as far as hooking up.

I forget now, but someone makes control arms that make a 12 bolt rear a true bolt in swap, probably Hotchkiss, Strange, or Moser.

Here is a update on the 12 bolt. it went in with no probs, brakes lines fit,
The upper an lower controll arms came from SSM, South Side Machine co.
The kit is for 64 to 72 A body 12 bolt to adapt to 78 to 87 10 bolt G body.

There were never any 12 bolts in any chevy car after 1972, the rears in the Monte SS's are 7 and 5/8 inche rears, same as the last gen F bodies but with less splines on the axle shafts.

That would be correct.
