I don't post much on the forum, I just browse and read sometimes. I haven't put much thought into my El Camino until now. My goals for now are to strip all the silver off of it and get a new paint job, everything black, I like the look of just one solid color and the other is to get some nice sounding exhaust on it. I really don't know anything about cars at all but my dad does and he basically bought the elk for me. Anyway I want to get dual exhaust with a nice rumble sound, you know where you can hear the car before you see it. But not so loud that the law doesn't aprove. I just want to get some thoughts and advice of you guys, like what mufflers to go with and what set up. I've been looking at Flowmasters online and listening to the sound clips and they sound like what I want. What should I go with and what might be the price range cause I'm not so rich, just want some opinions. Thanks.

A set of turbo mufflers are not expensive. Nice rumble but not loud. I am pleased with dynamax super turbos. _________________ 78 Camino SS, 355,built 700r4,3.23

A set of mufflers? I was also wondering, how would dual exhaust work out. My muffler is sideways by the rear axle, would you just have to branch two pipes off of one muffler?

I have mine set up like a MC SS . Stock manifolds going to a 2 1/2 performance cat. Then it spilts into two 2 1/4 pipes to the mufflers & tailpipes out the back. You can do true duals but you will have to modify or replace the cross member, that is if you live in a non emmision county. _________________ 78 Camino SS, 355,built 700r4,3.23

There are several places that sell a "Cat Back" dual exhaust system for that year model. It would be the easiest way to go.
Glasspacks and Turbo Mufflers will give a little better rumble to the truck. Flow Master makes some decent mufflers, not the best by far but still really good and pretty darn solid. I have flowmaster on two of my three El Caminos. As a matter of fact I have a complete dual flowmaster exhaust system 2.5" aluminized pipes and 30 series mufflers on them both. I installed them my self but you would need to have true dual exhausts not Cat Back for the same thing. _________________ Home Site: http://www.elcaminoplace.com

What do you think the price range would be for running true duals, because I believe I want to do that. That "Cat Back" thing you were talking about if its what I Think it is, it looks funky, I like just the two straight pipes out the back. I just need a estimate range.
Also, another thing, I put a glasspack on my 84, trying to get somewhat of a better soudn then what was on there. My sisters blazer is louder then my car now and I don't get it, thats why I wanna go with some dual exhaust.

First, you have to find someone who will bend it for you because there is no "off-the-shelf" system that you can buy. Then you have to decide if you want to replace/modify the existing transmission crossmember.
My friend just had duals without cats put on his Monte Carlo. Including modifying the crossmember his system cost him $700. I had duals with cats and a crossmembers.com double hump crossmember installed on my Elky and it cost me about $650. Both systems were done with 2.5" aluminized pipe. This may sound high but there is a lot of labor involved in custom bending an exhaust.
A little over a year ago I installed a Dynomax cat-back system on my 86 MCSS for about $300 and spent another $130 on a new Catco catalytic convertor. _________________ Ernie

My system is just for sound, not performance--
Just after I bought the car ('84 with 305, single cat) the muffler fell off. And I thought it sounded pretty cool like that. But I grew up in the '60's listening to glasspacks. Anyway, I had local custom muffler shop bend up open "dual" pipes to exit under the rear bumper. The long open tubes give me that deep rumble that bfings back the old days. Cat makes a decent muffler all by itself.
