i have a 69 with a th400 and a crate 350 and my flywheel was stripped out so it was making the grinding noise so i dropped the tranny and changed the starter and flywheel the guy at my local part store said that there was only 1 starter for the 350 so i got that and then i got the flywheel to match the old one.. i put it all together and it started up perfect when i was driveing it it was makeing a rattling noise toward the passinger side so i switech to bitch and let my girl drive so i could hear it, it was just a metal hose banging against the firewall.. so i moved it and when my gf started it up it did that same old grinding noise again!!! Sad i dont know what to do all that work for nothing!!! what could it be

The knurling on the starter bolts could be worn out, making the starter wobble and move all over the place when cranking. I found out the hard way and went through like 4 starters before I figured it out. New bolts cured the problem.

You may need to shim the starter to get the correct gear mesh between the starter and flexplate. Autos dont have flywheels.

If you have it shimed that much its too tight. Not sure why it did it before.

I once had the bolts connecting my flexplate to the torque convertor come loose. Gave me a bad grinding noise when it tried to start it.
