We bought our beautiful 84 SS yesterday. Two problems. First, how do I tell what model auto this has? Second, the first three gears shift very well but it won't go into OD at all. The car has sat for a little over a year without moving. It was started several times a month but didn't move. Any idea what the issue could be and how I can tell what model auto this has?

Thanks,

it could only be a swap if it's an OD.

here is a link to help you

http://www.monte-list.nu/tech/trannyid.shtml

if it isn't the 200-4r it's a 700-r4.

Thanks for the reply. I think I've found at least PART of the problem, but I still have to ID the eng., tranny AND now the carb! I can't figure out how to attach a pic to this post or I'd do it. I've read where an improperly adjusted Throttle Valve cable could lead to improper shifting and not going into OD. So I checked mine out and the prior owner had a damn BOLT with the TV cable end looped over it! THERE IS NO TV cable ASSEMBLY! My fault for not looking at things closer before buying. now I have to ID the carb so I can buy the TV cable assembly where it attaches to the moveable plate on the carb linkage. Anyone know how to ID this part or are they the same?

If I assume the eng is a 350 and the tranny is a turbo 400, anyone know where I can get the correct TV cable assembly? Here's the spot where my missing assembly has been replaced by a BOLT by the prior owner!

350 and 400 are only three speed transmissions some do have a lock up torque converter the 350 and 400 turbos dolnt have a TV cable they have a kickdown cable and the adjustment on those is no where near as critical as a 700r4 check what type of trans you have first then go from there

You can tell what trans you have by the pan shape. Link,
