I've got a 1985 Elcamino with 65,000 miles, a 4.3 engine, 200 automatic tranny. Tranny was rebuilt twice at about 35,000 miles due to convertor lock up issues. Truck was running fine stop at a light then accelerate and it makes clunks, bangs, grinding of gears noises Crying drop it in low and with much effort it pulls itself the mile or so I need to go. Didn't sound like it was slipping but like the brake was on. Any ideas..... think this is an easy fix ? Tight on cash but I'm about ready to use the tranny for a boat ancor. I have a 200R4 from a 1986 Monti SS is this a direct plug and play swap ? I did some reading on the swap but never determaned if I need an controler for the lock up...... it should already be there, right ? but is it the same plugs and wiring ?

Don't know about the compatibility of the wiring and plugs, but should not be a difficult change over, but don't spend another dime on that TH200, it is a crappy trans. I changed my '85 out to a TH350 after the 200 went bad twice and it made a world of difference. A 2004R swap is even better. The only thing is a TH350 is a good swap for a Elky with a 2.41 rear axle ratio. Since the 2004R is an overdrive the highway RPM will be a little low for good performance with a 2.41 rear axle ratio.

I understand though that the '86 and '87s with the 2004R came with either the 2.41 or the 3.08. The 3.08 was called the performance rear axle. My '87 has a 2004R and a 3.08 rear axle.

Have you checked out bowtieoverdrives.com for the information on their web site?

Doug

I did look at bowtie overdrives among other info posted on this site.
My RPO code label has GU2 which I think is for a 2:73 axle ratio would this gear be OK to use the 200R4 with ?
I do have a 350 turbo but don't remember what it is out of.

I believe the 2004R will be fine with the 2.73 rear axle since it was also installed in front of the 2.41 ratio. And you are right the GU2 RPO code is the 2.73 ratio. Your TH200 trans had a lockup torque converter so I would think the computer and brake switch should also control the 2004R lockup converter. I now understand that the wiring harness for the TH200 and the 2004R controlling the torque converter is the same. Your carburetor or I quess in your case the throttle body should also have the linkage for the TV cable.

The only real modification that you will probably need to do is to move the transmission cross member rearward a few inches.

You might want a transmission shop do this swap, at least get a few estimates on it.
