Has anyone looked into if one of these Allison 1000 5 or 6 spd transmissions would be an option for those of us who want more gears and don't feel like going the manual route?
I understand these transmissions can be expensive, but in the event I were lucky to get one w/reasonable miles for a reasonable price..
What would I need to do say to bolt one up to my 455 big block buick?
I know one of the major issues is that the Allison tranny's are computer controlled, so I would need a stand alone computer..WHAT ELSE?
Thanks and chime on in!!

Scott,
You are kidding - right? With an engine that pure stock had about 600 ft/lbs of torque you could start in high gear and just pull off in your Elky. It would be a total waste! The BBB is good from 1000 to 5000 RPM and develops enough torque through out that hold range to push your El Camino with no problem.
I can bring mine down to 1000 RPM in 5th and crack the throttle a little and just go. I wouldn't want it shifting that much. _________________ 84 Elky with 455 Buick, Tremec TKO600 5 speed, 8.5 3:42 posi -

No, not kidding!!
Actually I am throwing everything out there I can think of so I don't jump in to a decision and regret it later for not asking questions like these.
EDUCATE me then.
What is the drawback or are there many to not selecting that particular tranny?
I thought I read somewhere that those allisons have an option to shift like a manual tranny..
Thanks!

They are heavy and they are huge, they are made originally for heavy duty trucks(1 1/2 tons and up), they probably wouldnt even fit under the trans tunnel of a Camino. Plus the bellhousing bolt pattern is different than a Buick. Cheaper to buy a 700R4 built to handle some power and add a Gear Vendors overdrive.
