Hey, guys, I've got a '72 El Camino with a brand new 350 engine in it (put in before I bought it). It does still have the original, three-speed, automatic transmission, though. If and when I'm ready to swap it out, any advice on what I should look for? Thanks.

Brian

High fuel price=swap to overdrive trans. The 200 4r is the least involved swap.

There's one suggestion... Any others? Or is that pretty much the consensus?

Okay, so doing some reading, it looks like my best choices would be the 200-4R or the 700R4... I've read some info on 'em, but a lot of it was a bit more technical than where I'm at right now... Anyone have any advice/info?

200-4R is a great transmission and is perfect for your application. But, keep in mind, they are getting harder and hard to find. Also, earlier models of these were rather weak and didn't take well to abuse. That being said, there are tons of 700R4 transmissions out there. Also, it has an advante of a higher first gear for more aggressive take-offs. However, you have to move the crossmember and shorten the driveshaft. Honestly, if you are swapping transmissions and doing the TV cable (highly necessary!), moving a crossmember (possibly even having a new one fabricated) and shortening the driveshaft becomes much simpler by comparision.

I'd go with the 700R4 for the rason of the first gear and their ready availability.
