I have a problem with all my gauges in my 86 Caballero but i am mainly trying to fix the Gas gauge because its annoying becuase i am always running out of gas. Anyways its always stuck above the F. I check the ground and cleaned the area. My dad thinks its the Float and that its stuck but i have a feeling it may be something else. I wanted to know if there were any ways to test if its the gauge or if its the fuel sending unit?

The wire at the tank, that feeds the sending unit, plugs in to the wire harness by the tail lights, unplug it there, then where you unplugged it from, use a wire and groung it to a good ground with the Ignition on while watching the fuel guage. (Helps to have a helper for this part) If the Gauge works the needle will opperate, and that will tell you the wireing is also good and that would indicate a bad sending unit. Hope this helps.

The fuel gauge is usually separately wired from the rest of the gauges but if your wiring to the gas tank checks out I'd be checking the grounds to the gauge cluster. Also make sure the cluster is fully seated in the dash connector too.

Yea i ripped apart the dash yesterday in the morning fergot to mention that. I made sure that it was seated right. I just noticed now that my gas gauge moves when i turn the key. This morning i was moving it and i turned the key and the needle moved further right from the Full mark and it used to be stuck at a 3 oclock position.
Dam gauge is stuck again. Still havent tested the grounding out the wire that goes to the light harness. I was just wondering about the other three gauges and why they seem to not be working.

The more info you provided now points me in the direction that your problem is more in the connection or grounds at the Cluster. Dirty or loose, bad contacts with the plug.
You can PRINT them out and use them while your looking, instead of going back to your Computer. And they will give you every thing you
need to trace out the system, except testing equipment, and the time to do it of course. lol _________________ http://elcaminocentral.com/gallery-album_CoyoteOn2s77Cage.html
