I have a 1980 El Camino with a 305. It does not start at all the starter doesnt even turn over. I bench tested motor and solenoid both passed. I found no power going to the solenoid and no power coming out of the ignition switch. I bought a new ignition switch and just plugged it in and still same problem. Do I have to install it on the actual column for it to actually work? Is there some Type of neutral safety switch that hooks up to the actual ignition switch? I do see a rod going into the actual ignition switch. Please Help
Don't know if the neutral safety switch is your problem, but I had to replace the one one my '85. The contacts were pretty iffy looking and It solved my problem.

Marcos, First of all ~ YES ~ IT HAS TO BE MOUNTED TO THE COLUM, that rod you see is what opperates the switch when you turn the key. The Neutral Safety Switch is also located on the steering colum. It also opperates your Back-up lights ~~~ DO THEY WORK when you place it in reverse with the Ign. on? If so, that's an indication your N/S switch MAY still be good, if they don't work, chances are the N/S switch is bad. If It does Not light up the reverse lights, I would check to see if power is getting to the switch with the key on, (check if you have 12 volts to the orange/black wire going to the n/s switch). If you do and no back-up lights, replace the switch. If No power in the orange/black wire, your problem is with your ECM. Now, I'd also be sure you are getting 12 volts to the Ign. switch, that would be the RED Wire. If not, look for blown fuse or fuseable link. If yes ~~ Next see if you get 12 volts to the purple wire when you turn Ign. switch to the start possition, if that's a yes, then check it at the starter sol. (purple wire). If yes at switch, no at sol, bad wire or bad connection, If yes at sol, the Starter should work, and you said you bench tested it, so if it doesn't, check that connection where the purple wire connects to the sol. terminal for good contact.
Let us know what you find out after you check all the above.

I installed the ignition switch on the steering column, still nothing. I'm wondering if I have to install the whole instrument panel because im trying to start it with the instrument panel off.

This is going to sound like a smarta$$ answer but have you made sure the the rod/tang is connected to the Neutral safety switch correctly? It has to engage the switch slider to allow it to move to the HOT position and allow the car to start. It gets moved by the gear selector lever and should only allow starting in PARK or NEUTRAL position.

You might also want to check that you did not blow the fusable link coming from the starter silinoid.I had a similar problem and that turned out to be my solution.
