pm Post subject: supercharger kit for 305
Hey guys I do not know much about supercharger, but I was reading some stuff about them and people telling me if I add a superchager to my car I can make like 200+ more HP with it on. I do not know if it is true or not, but like I said from what I saw it will a lot to a car. of HP to a car. So I was wondering is if I added a supercharger to my 305 will it have over 300 HP or am I missing something about supercharger? I know they are a ton of money, but just let me know. If I can make like 350 with just a supercharger I will buy it instead of buying a whole new engine _________________ El Camino Nation the second best El Camino forum on the web http://elcamino.freeforums.org/portal.php
how much extra power you get from adding a supercharger depends on a number of things;
1: how much power you are starting with
2: how much boost you are going to run
3: how efficiently the engine can use the boost pressure
4: how efficient the intake tract and the exhaust tract is
5: what cam timing you run
6: what ignition timing you run
7: how well the ignition and fuel curves are tuned
if you are starting with a stock engine, and you add a blower that puts out 7psi of boost pressure, you can pick up about a 50% increase in power on average on average. run the boost to 15psi and you can double your horse power output.
take that same 7psi system, add better heads, intake, and exhaust, and even though the boost pressure drops, power actually goes up. why? because boost pressure is actually a measure of back pressure in the intake system in reality. _________________ 64 falcon

You would be better off putting the money towards a 350, would most likely be $$$ ahead,. Unless you drop alot of $$$ into the 305 in mods, you would have a good chance of gernading it. $$$$$ down the drain
Just my $1.98 worth, (Inflation Sucks don't ya know) _________________ Keep the Shiney Side Up

Your biggest draw back with trying to supercharge a 305 is the small ports and valves in the heads. You just cant run big valves in the 305 because of the small bore diameter. If your really serious about supercharging, heads will make or break the motor. Build the motor around the supercharger and start with a good flowing set of heads.
Well what I really want to do (when I get the money) is to drop a 454! Yes I sad it a 454. I know I will need new suspension and the whole bit, but I thought hell if I could supercharg my 305 to make at least 300, then I would go that rout insteaid _________________ El Camino Nation the second best El Camino forum on the web http://elcamino.freeforums.org/portal.php
This is a Weiand 177 supercharger. Its price is $2,489. It says it can give you 25-40% more power. If you can figure you are at 165 hp, you are looking at a maximum of 230 hp. There is a whole lot more to supercharging than just bolting it on.
This is a 330hp crate motor. It will drop right into your current bay. Bolt on your intake and carb, drop in your distributor, put back your radiotor, and enjoy the hp. Its price is $2,659.
After what it would cost to Supercharge, you'll be lucky to break even. Crate motor will get you 100 hp. You will feel the difference.
Tons more options with this motor. Stroking it to a 383, for one (400+ hp is pretty easy). Plus, you could SC it later for some real gains.
If you have the money, look at the ZZ383 Crate motor. Its still a small block chevy (same size and weight as your current motor), but much larger in terms of internals. $5,000 (or so) will get you 425 hp/449ft.lb of torque. This is VERY GOOD power for the weight. It performs like a standard (not built) Big Block. Lots of guys here love this motor. I lust after this motor. _________________ Check out my (wife's) El Camino at http://elcaminocentral.com/gallery-album_Wifes-65-ELky.html

I would not recommend a supercharger . If you bolt on a supercharger and run enough boost to make a big difference you would need to upgrade your bottom end also . You will throw every rod out of the bottom end . You will also need to upgrade your heads, intake and buy a whole new belt assembly .. You will be miles ahead buying a crate motor .. I bought a 500 HP crate motor on ebay for $3800 .. It is super mean and has a ton of torque . It runs high 10's low 11's in a 1/4 . I got a heck of a deal on that motor . I can give you the shop's info if you're interested in getting one .. Good luck !! _________________
Hey guys thank for all the input about supercharging the 305. I know it is a shitty engine, but I thought I would ask. Anyway this is what I really want to buy for my El Camino
