pm Post subject: Good news & bad news
Finally jacked up the 84 enough & on stands high enough to get in & read the differential tag & it turns out I do have a linited slip rear end. Bad news is I confirmed that I dont have an OD tranny, its a TH350 (square pan with a corner cut off). Sure could use that 4th gear these days! I spose I could take a chance & swap in a used TH200,but thats probly not wise. The TH200 is the exact dimensions, correct? Thanks. I just spent alot of cash for the same kind of situation on my 79 vette. It is a 350 & had a TH350.I bought an aftermarket TH200-4R beefed up,for about $1500.Direct bolt-in,though. _________________ '79 Chevy Corvette,350 sbc- '78 Olds Cutlass Supreme,350 sbo'- 99 Mitsubishi Galant,3.0 V6- '84 Chevy El Camino Conquista,305 sbc

Seems popular opinion is that the 2004r is the stronger OD tranny so long as it's prepared properly. Cheaper option than a 700R4 too from what I've seen.
I'd just like to get a tranny in mine that would last more than 15K. Geez, I do everything right and never even get to make a pass at the dragstrip!

I guess with a 700 you'd have to get your driveshaft shortened or buy another one. Cant believe your trannys are failing at 15K! Whats up with that? _________________ '79 Chevy Corvette,350 sbc- '78 Olds Cutlass Supreme,350 sbo'- 99 Mitsubishi Galant,3.0 V6- '84 Chevy El Camino Conquista,305 sbc
My 85 Camino has 62,000 miles and this is the third time the th200 tranny went and it will be replaced with a 200r4 or a 350 turbo. I could see if it was abused but my 75 year old Dad has driven it around a 3 square mile town with short trips on the expressway the past 40,000 miles.
Is there a TH200 and a TH200-R4? _________________ '79 Chevy Corvette,350 sbc- '78 Olds Cutlass Supreme,350 sbo'- 99 Mitsubishi Galant,3.0 V6- '84 Chevy El Camino Conquista,305 sbc

Yes, The TH200 was a lightweight version of the TH250 3 speed that came out in the late 70's, the 200R4 is an OD tranny. The TH200 looks like the Th350 but is metric and has CRC stamped on it.

My '85 came from the factory with the TH200 Metric. After it crapped out twice, I had it replaced with a TH350. The TH200 had a lockup torque converter but the '85 has a 2.41 rear axle so I did not miss it.
The TH350 made a world of difference in the driving pleasure and performance of the '85. It seemed like the TH200 never was in the right gear after slowing for a corner, etc and the torque converter would lock up at round 35 MPH and lug the engine. May it be melted down and made into toys and beer cans. It was not worth a damn behind an engine.

Does the pan resemble the TH350,as well? I've been thinking since I was able to get a look at it,that I had a TH350. _________________ '79 Chevy Corvette,350 sbc- '78 Olds Cutlass Supreme,350 sbo'- 99 Mitsubishi Galant,3.0 V6- '84 Chevy El Camino Conquista,305 sbc
