17x7's should fit with a conservative sized tire but the 17x9's may have clearance issues with a wider tire. This assumes a factory suspension setup.
I'd say nothing wider than a 255mm section width on a stock suspension setup on the rear. 235 on the front should be no issue.
That's just an opinion, Your El Camino is considered part of the third generation so wait for other forum members who own this specific generation to answer your questions too.
