In 1980 a 305 4bbl was the largest motor available. Recently I have been inquiring about the total installed in that year. This is the info I received from a friend in Detroit.
"Made alot of calls to dealers in Cleveland then called the dealer that sold the car. His company told me that it was 220 but to call GM so I called between 6 and 8 corp. offices in Detroit and their restoration devision said it was 225 in 1980. I'm just going by them and I dont claim to be 100% correct."
A 305 is not a wow factor, but the low production number was interesting.

There were 40,932 El Camino made in 1980. 50% were 3.8L V6's, 23.9% were 4.4L V8's, and 26.1% were 5.0L V8's. All you had to do was ask the question here and we would have told you the statistics.

Maybe you just make it up and nobody knows so we can't argue! Laugh

Hi Ernie, We discussed this topic a few years ago. I remember getting the same stats here at EC. I also remember mrapuii getting involved in the conversation. Those were the days... Thanks for setting the record strait.

No, I wouldn't do that. I've got quite a lot of old GM documentation that I use to research the answers.

Unfortunatly, I haven't found any information about that headlight switch for you but I'll keep looking. Smile

For the math impaired that would come out to 10,683 305s produced in 1980.

Ok Ernie, what percentage of those Elky still are driving with a 305 in 2008? Happy

You are a real treasure for the site. Thanks for all you posts. I vote we double the fee you charge for answering all the questions.

The motor has not been touched. I changed the spark plugs and the air filter of course, but it's never been rebuilt. I changed the battery twice & I changed the fuel filter one time too... The decals are original from the factory. I even have the original floormats and 8 track tape player! My rediator had to be replaced about 5 years ago. It couldn't be fixed. Sad I had the bottom ( below the stripe ) repainted in 2005 because the paint was pealing off on the bottom of the doors. The bed was repainted but it's Never, Never had any rust! Zebart undercoated two times..
Sadly, I'm in need of a compressor for the air conditioning. It works, but the freon leaks out within a couple years. I bought a few chrome inserts for the rally wheels from a fellow EC member as 2 of them fell off over the years. I've been giving this beauty the best of care since March of 1982. Always parked in my garage and only driven on the nice days. Never in the rain or snow... As you can tell, I love my El Camino with a passion! We belong together, for life Happy . Call me crazy if you want.......

The 305 is not a powerhouse but it is a long life engine. My 86 Elky has the original engine that has had alternator, starter, water pump A/C compressor and such replaced. Actually all of those have been swapped at least twice. The only internal part to be swapped is the timing chain. I drive it every day and right now it has 262,500 miles on it. I have no idea how far the engine will go but I plan to find out.

The only real modification is to junk the carb and swap to TBI fuel injection. That was the best thing I ever did for my Elky. Now it starts and runs hot or cold and never hesitates. The drivability is just like a modern car. I bought the Elky back in 1991 with just 38,000 miles on it so I know it's history.
