steering column bearings.........

Help please...........I just took my 84 elko steering column down to fix (tighten the 4 bolts.)......and my thanks for those who posted both the how to and the fix portions.........success..........now, the plastic retainers on both the upper and lower bearings in the tilt section are broken......anyone know where i can get these......

i just replaced these on my elky this week. i found the bearing i needed on www.elcaminostore.com, however i found it hard to fork over 52$ a bearing. Luckily a family friend who is a mechanic happened to have a column out of a 84 Chevy Truck that was junk, except the bearings.

my suggestion is junkyard, or a friendly mechanic if you can find one near you.

the outer part of the bearings are actually pressed in, and very hard to remove, in fact that mechanic that had the parts said generally when replacing bearings the outer bearing and inner bearing were kept in there. They would replace the balls/plastic keeper. The bottom bearing has the inner bearing assembly attached to the shaft which is pressed on as well.

The parts i had to replace wound up being just the plastic and the bearings themselves, as well as one interior bearing brace.

(by the way dont forget to put your brights switch back on like i did! i had to disassemble everything a second time just to fix that! Do'h!)

Again, many thanks to those who helped and posted the how to articles.....I actually had a friend had an old steering column (81) and I got the bearings from it.........worked great and steering column nice and tight now......By the way, it took me more than one time to get it back together, kept forgetting things.....
