My wife just got a brand new 2009 not going to say what kind but ( we've had new Ford and 2 new Chevys) all were junk
Anyways she got it last Saturday. Well I drove it this Sunday for the first time. We where going down the highway at ( about 65 mph) when someones pitt bull ran out from the side of the road in front of us. No time to do anything except say (Oh S***) BAM!
$4000.00 later and I have learned no more love for a Pitt Bull. Yes we had full coverage insurance, but $500.00 deductable. Plus it made my wife cry (brand new car) and (killed the dog)
Don't get me wrong it could have been alot worse, we were fine, the thing is if we had been in my 68 Elko we (may have bent the bumper) in her car plastic went everywhere.
P.S. Not to hurt anyones feelings but I hate those dogs, I have 2 large dogs myself. I just never have liked that breed of dog. ( to each his own)

Did the dog have tags? If so, its owner may be liable for helping cover the damage, since the dog wasn't tied up and was running loose. I hit a dog in my dad's truck a couple years back, and the owners had to fix the damage because the dog wasn't tied up or in a fenced yard.

I'm confused, are you saying your vehicle sustained $4000 in damage from hitting the pit bull or you swerved to avoid the dog and hit something else? If you got that much damage from hitting a dog, please tell us what kind of vehicle it is, so that I'll never buy one! I just hit a raccoon that appeared to be the size of a small elephant the other night doing about 60mph, in my Grand Am and didn't get any damage...just heard "thump thump" looked in my rear view mirror just in time to see the tractor trailer behind me finish him off and turn poor ole Rocky into road pizza. (squish) I also have a very big Rott/Shepperd that looks like a Shepperd on steroids...if he ever got hit by a car, he'd just get PO'd and if the driver stopped he'd probably carjack the guy and drive off in the guys car...he's a pretty smart dog but, he's mean and has no sense of humor!

Donny, that is a good story. I don't doubt the amount of damage and cost to repair a modern car. Here in OZ they do 5 kph (3 mph) impact tests on cars and price the damage. Some of those little jap cars are almost written off due to the high cost of the replacement parts.
I am impressed with my '75 El Camino - the bumpers are like iron girders and the front has the impact absorbers too of course.
Here in Australia we have wild Wombats. These little buggers are stocky and are maybe twice the size of a Beaver. You hit one of those and it will take out your front suspension as they are low to the ground.

The car is a Toyota Corolla 2009, I myself have never owned a import however after the 2005 Mustang (first year they came out) it turned out to be junk, shop, after shop after shop, Traded it for a 2007 Chevy Colbalt, Junk, My coke can has more metal in it! So my wife wanted to try the Toyota and to be honest it is a better built car. I let her get what she wanted because she didn't say anything bad when I saved my pennies and dimes to buy my 1968 El Camino S/S
The Pitt Bull on the other hand was built well himself. Not very tall but SOLID! 60 pounds + at 60 miles an hour (you do the math)
HE did have a collar on however it did not have a tag. I took the collar and left a note with someone down the road to give it the owner should he come looking for his Beast (kind of scary taking the collar off a Pitt Bull that your not sure is not fakeing)
As for the dollar amount we have not gotten a est. yet but in todays market I'm sure it's between $3000.00 to $5000.00 damage
The bottom line is Pitt Bulls and Toyota Corolla's don't mix, and plastic don't bend

Good point. If you hit the dog in an area that has a leash or restraint law, the owners could be liable. Most homeowners policies have liability coverage for just such a thing. The hard part, of course, will be finding the owner. If you do find the owner, turn their name into your auto insurance company's claims department, and they will go after the owner. This would be to your advantage, since if it was the dog owners fault, the auto insurance claim will not count against you and make your rates increase. _________________ 1986 El Camino SS
