I got what I feel is a pretty good deal on my 68 on Craigslist. I was the first person to see it after the owner posted the ad. But I've bought and sold a few cars and bikes on that site, assorted other things too! I had to watch it close but in the end I came out alright!
Anyone else?

Haha I was waiting for someone to bring this up. I bought my El Camino off of craigslist 7 months ago. Got a great deal on what the owner considered a 400sbc, no back registration, no rust having car, but he says the motor needs to be rebuilt, has bad rings, needs to be honed and so on, but it came with an extra set of rims, had glasspacks, had a tilt, and it ran but kinda bad. Me being the young freshy turned 18 year old I am bought it anyways and trailered it home, all for 600 bucks. Well he lied about everything it had a 305, $450 in back registration, and a hole you could fit a basketball through on both passenger and driver side floorboard(he put a piece of plywood over each hole and put carpet over it) but the greatest thing he lied abut and I'm glad the dummy did was that the only thing wrong with the motor was it needed an oil pan gasket which got oil on the exhaust causing it to smoke badly, and a tune up, so for $1200 I got my first car and whole lot of experiance working on them. Overall I am overjoyed with the decision I made.(everybody in my family was trying to tell me not to buy it) Sorry for the novel I wrote, but what can I say Im a proud Elky owner! _________________ -Andrew, 1974 El Camino, finally a 350!
I bought mine on CraigsList for $750 in December 2006.
It was located a couple hours away, but I was able to drive it home. It actually drove fairly well considering it had a tired V6 and was used as a truck fo part of it's life.
I guess I got lucky. The title was clear and there was no rust. It was a perfect project car. _________________

About a year ago I was looking for a another El Camino to use as a parts runner while I was finishing up my 67. Found a 83 on craigslist so I emailed it to my girlfriend to get her opinon on it. It belonged to a elderly gentlemen and this grandson was selling it cause the old guy just couldn't get in and out of it anymore.
To make a long story short. My girlfriend and I talked about it. I decided to pass. She called the guy the next day and bought it. So it's sort of like I got it. We really felt like we stole it. The guy was so sad to see it go.
As I said I got my ELKO off Craigslist and I feel like I did fine however I know one guy that bought a boat from a police officer on there and he got ripped off, the price should have told him (if it's to good ) but still it was wrong. I myself traded a sport bike and some cash for a hotrod, the next day the guy Emails me how he went out dragging his knees, playing hard on it then 2 days later he calls saying he thinks it had a flat cam, he did not ask for his money back but he was disapointed as was I. I felt bad for him but it was running fine when he bought it.
When I sold the hotrod on there the guy said he did not want a hotrod he had to work on all the time. I told him there was no such thing, if you race it you will brake it (or your not racing hard enough) I said he was welcome to bring anyone he wanted to check it out before he spent his money, but when the cash changed hands the deal was done. It was sold before we got to the first stop sign!
Do your homework, know your stuff!

I bought a Dodge A100 pickup (Yes it's a van pickup) at 6am off of Craigslist, got it running, pressure washed the mold & some bondo off of it & reposted it for $1500. Same day it was gone for $1200.
I had originally planned on using my 2004 Hemi PU chassis & running gear as a donor & then thought about my other 3-4 projects in front of it.
My wife was happy to see it come & MORE go!
It would have made a cool hemi sled....
It went to a guy that specializes in mopar parts (for a parts runner).
Anyway Craigslist rocks! _________________ Have Fun! Bob

I forgot to mention....
Buyer beware & be smart!
If you don't live & breath this stuff everyday you need to know (or hire) someone who does.

Didn't get my El Camino from Craigs list but did get real nice camper back for my series 3 only last Tuesday. I've been looking for ages. Now I'm a happy camper _________________ Tighten it 'till it strips then back it off half a turn.
Zach, I'd say you did great on that Elk. Seems the motor's worth that, and looks to be restorable. Another one saved, good deal.... _________________ Mark

I bought mine off craigslist for $500 . The body was pretty straight with a slight dent in the right side bed . the guy who had it for sale didnt know much about cars and said it didnt run . i went to look at it and i liked what i saw . it was solid with flowmaster exhaust and a 350 SBC - 010 block . I did some tinkering and figured out fairly quickly that the ECM in the HEI distributor or the coil was bad .. it had compression and was getting fuel but no fire to the plugs . he was asking $1300 but i talked him down to $500 because it didnt run . i paid the guy and got the title and the next day i went to the parts store and bought a ECM and installed the ECM right there in the guys yard and started it right up and drove it home . He just sat there and scratched his head . I got a great deal . I have since replaced or rebuilt pretty much everything and its a street monster with a 406 roller motor pushing almost 700 Horsepower now . I love my Elky .
Like the guys said earlier" you must know what you are doing or have someone with you who does or you can and will get your butt burned very badly "
I have bought and sold several other cars,trucks,4 wheelers and hotrod parts off craigslist since also . We are very lucky to have a great free website like Craigslist. _________________

I bought mine of CL. He was asking 2200. I drove up with a friend who is a mechanic. We took it on a quick beat run, he crawled under it and checked it over nose to tail.
He looked at me and said "If you don't buy it, I will." So I asked the kid selling if he'd take 1700 for it, he said no and we settled on 1900.
Came by to pick it up the following week.
CL is a great way to find project vehicles. Just a matter of knowing what to check, or bringing someone who does.
