A couple of years ago I needed a 350 for my 74 ELKO, I just happened to stop by a O'Reilies auto store and they had a brand new 350 crate engine on display that someone had ordered and then not picked up. A young sales guy said that it was $1600.00. total (no core) I said if he would throw in a carb I would pay cash for it right then. He said deal so I paid him and said I would pick it up the next day.
I had a buddy that would help me do the change out for my old motor (still ran)
I went to pick it up and the manager said there was a $250.00 core charge. I explained I had ask that question and was told (no core charge)
HE said the young guy did not have the training to sell the motor and that if I wanted it I would have to pay the core charge.
Well he pissed me off so I said just give me back my money,His answer; Send in the original sales receipt to corp. office and they would cut me a check in 2 to 3 weeks. I said I paid cash last night and I want cash now!
HE then told me to leave the store and deal with corp. or he would call the police. I told him (you took my money and now you won,t return it or honor the sale, so call the police because you you ripped me off). The police came and said it he asked me to leave and I didn't I would be arrested. So I left
I then went to another O'Reilies and told my story to that store manager. He gave me the district managers phone # I called him and explained the deal and he said go back in the morning and I could pick the motor up without the core charge!
I put that motor in my ELKO and put 30,000 HARD miles on it before I sold the truck. I would leave black marks from stop sign to stop sign!
The ATK motor was great , it came complete with everything except carb. I'm talking plugs, wires, even water pump. It had a 3 year or 30,000 mile warranty. At one point I called ATK and said I had a slight oil leak and they sent me some die and black light bulb to locate it.
I guess my point is all places have good people and bad, as we all have our good days and bad!
P.S. I still do bussiness with O'Reilies and I do recommend ATK motors
Thanks
Donny
