Hey guys, just looking for y'alls two cents in regard to what sort of exhaust to use. The engine is nearing completion and I'm trying to find the best bang for my buck with an aftermarket exhaust system.
There is no real way to determine what it will sound like once I get it installed but maybe some of you guys have an idea.
Its a 327 c.i., hotter cam, 650 edelbrock cfm, edelbrock inake, stock heads, stock headers.
I'd love to have a mean, aggressive, sound. something that little kids would be terrified of. but nothing too over the top where it just sounds unrefined. I came across the Flowmaster American Series Thunder, Magnaflow, Dynomax, etc.
The intent is to have something mean, but I dont think I can quite afford a 600-800 dollar exhaust system. Something in the 300-400 range would work. I had intended just to dump the exhaust, but maybe I can get some ideas on the pros/cons of this. I havent found a whole lot of other threads concerning this topic, or maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place.
Thanks for any ideas or suggestions. The engine should be complete within about 2-3 weeks so i'm starting to get pretty ancy.
Thanks guys,
Ev

stock headers.
I'm trying to figure this out...did you mean stock cast iron exhaust manifolds? I'm a bit confused as to why you would want to spend money on an exhaust system, but use cast iron exhaust manifolds and be more concerned with terrifying little children because of noise rather than being concerned about engine performance, what are ya some kind of neighborhood bully or hooligan?.....I would get much more fun out of terrifying their daddy whose drives a (fill in the blank) sports car. Pick on someone your own size...better yet pick on someone whose bigger than you...that's even more fun! Oh yeah...buy some headers too! _________________ "The day we lose our will to fight is the day we lose our freedom" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG4fe9GlWS8
hey buddy im curiuse to know what kinda power your making with your 327? i got a 68 ALL STOCK for being a forty year old 327 it gets up and go's. it would be faster with a better tranny though it has a power glide in it. im not to concerned with being LOUD i like to be stealth so the cops dont hear me mashing down the road on those night of drinking i pesonally would put some high end headers and magnaflows. i had a pair of magnaflows in my 89 lincolin (302 windsor) or how ever you spell it. and it sound gooooooodd nice low hum it didn't roare when i smash'ed it but it sounded solid plus i didn't have headers so thats why it wasn't loud. _________________

- I'd love to buy some aftermarket Headers but I just dont have the money, so I'm just gonna have to go with the stock cast iron exhaust manifolds. I know it would help me tremendously by upgrading but I'm sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place. All of the headers that I have researched would be in the 600-1000 price range.
- The reference to "terrifying little children" was more of a hypothetical one than literal. I see your point about being concerned with engine performance over just a loud car. That is my issue, I dont want to have just some loud obnoxious exhaust but one that would have a "refined" yet still intimidating exhaust note. Something capable of turning heads and worth being noticed as the car isnt much to look at right now. My 66 Pontiac 326 c.i. has turbo mufflers which have a very nice rumble at idle but smooths out some under acceleration. So I'm looking for something more than that.
Elky Holic:
- When I purchased the car it had a Rochester 2bbl. I ran the numbers and the car should have come from the factory with a 4bbl. This makes sense as the 2bbl and intake manifold were from a 67' model. It should have been a 275 h.p. model.
- It turns out once we got the engine broken down, the block has been bored .40 over. The car had way too much blowback to produce any kind of power so I really dont know what to expect once everything is complete. We switched the 2 spd powerglide for a TH-350 which should make a big difference itself. I'm hoping to be somewhere in the 310-320 hp range.
Thanks for the link elcaminofactory! Those prices are much more reasonable than I had been expecting. I can do a little bit more research and find a prospective pair to buy. I guess just about anything will be better than the stock cast irons.
As far as exhaust, do I need to wait on that until I choose a particular set of headers? I'm guessing 2 1/2 to 3" pipes will be good. The main think that worries me is the clearance issues. I guess manufacturers now are adept enough at making a product that can be installed with minimal modifications if any.
I have a 65 with a 350. The exhaust is Doud haedder 1'' 5/8 to 3'; collectors , x piping flowmaster mufflers and dumps before the axel. Sound bithin it turns heads. When are you looking to do your exhaust cuz i'm getting rid of mine in Nov. When I do my turbo. I will sell the whole thing cheap. _________________ www.cprstreetmachines.com

I'm probably lookin at doing it in mid october, theres a pretty good performance shop around here that I think can give me a pretty good deal and are real personable. Thanks for the offer though 65 Elky. Once everything is complete I will upload a bunch of pics.
Post some pics in the 2nd GEN gallery you can do some before and afters. _________________ www.cprstreetmachines.com

Ok I think I have a set up that could work. Theres a performance parts dealer around here that has Hooker Headers: 2451HKR for about 180$ ($20 mark up) and Flowmaster 40 Series Delta Flow Mufflers for about $80 a piece ($10 mark up), I still need to get an AC bracket and Header Reducers but with everything it should be right around or a little over $400 not including the pipes.
I've never heard this combination before. The mufflers sounded pretty good from Flowmaster's website, just about what I was looking for. It'd be much nicer to hear it in person though.
Have any of you guys had any experience with this type of setup? I'm assuming that headers today are made to better fit certain applications and shouldn't have to worry too much about clearance, loosening up, or anything else.
I havent bought the set up yet as I wanted to get a good idea of the products I'll be purchasing.
