I own a 1983 Diesel 350 El Camino, Does anyone know how many of these were made in 83 and 84?

Yea, I do get very good MPG, like.. 40+ or something crazy like that. But its no fun to drive Sad I'd rather have 10-15mpg than have 105hp Mad

Yeah, but that 105 HP diesel produces an awsome amount of torque. You could probably pull a small mountain down.

I read somewhere that it only makes 120 lbs of torque...

Diesel engines are known for the high torque output.

Most diesels are known for high torque-that one would be good for a boat anchor if it wasn't too heavy to lift over the side. That was the worst mistake GM ever made and they rectified quickly by scrapping the program. Turning a gas engine into a diesel is a terrible idea, in case anybody was thinking of trying on their own.

Well, I don't know about a mountain, but maybe a mole hill.

A very small percentage of diesel El Caminos were produced in 83 and 84. In calender year 83, 2.5% of the 24,010 Elkys sold had a diesel engine. In calender year 84, 0.4% of the 22,997 Elkys sold had a diesel engine. *

(* "Standard catalog of Chevelle 1964-1987" by John Gunnell)

The diesel El Camino was an anemic POS. The V6's had more HP and almost as much torque. For 83 & 84, the 229ci and 231ci V6 HP was rated at 110 @ 4000, torque rating was 190 @ 1600.

1983
LG4 305ci, HP = 145 @ 4000, Torque = 240 @ 1600
Diesel LF9 350ci, HP = 105 @ 3200, Torque = 200 @ 1600

1984
LG4 305ci, HP = 150 @ 4000, Torque = 240 @ 2400
Diesel LF9 350ci, HP = 105 @ 3200, Torque = 200 @ 1600

For all of the 5th gen engine's HP and torque ratings go here:

78-87 El Camino Engines - Horsepower - Torque

Hello i two have a Diesel El Camino and have been looking for one most of my life... as a kid (the 80's) we had tons of old gm diesel and very very few where bad or JUNK as has been reported here on this page. look at the 350dieselpage.com. NOW i have one and I'm putting it back to factory with a rebuilt 350 Diesel motor and a new 200r4 or 700r4 depending on more research in to the gearing and such. I cant wait to see that "wait" light glow for the first time.....

Hey Ernie. Love those quotes. Are you a library during the night or something?

BTW, my 76 year old Model A has only a little less than half of that diesel's HP and torque.

Ditto JimDeighty's quote "Yea, I do get very good MPG, like.. 40+ or something crazy like that. But its no fun to drive. I'd rather have 10-15mpg than have 105hp"
