i just noticed that there is a point system on here, none of the other forums i'm on has something like this, can anyone shed any light on this and what it is for?

It's another way of tracking site participation. In addition to counting a member's number of posts, points are given (10 for a reply, 20 for starting a new post). I think the software even gives additional points for use of graphics and other sophisticated inclusions in a post...not sure of this.
Anyway, it's another forum participation measurement tool.
