136806Z115038

1 - Chevrolet Division of GM
36 - Malibu or El Camino Custom V8
80 - 2 door pickup delivery
6 - 1966
Z - Fremont CA final assembly plant
115038 - Production sequence number, First Chevelle model was 100001 and went up from there and includes all models in the Chevelle line-up. This was the 15,038 order filled at Fremont. NOTE-Vehicles did not roll of line in sequence though as models were stagged to not over-cycle the line operations with too many of the same type and options.

From 1965 thru 1971 the 3rd digit in Chevrolet VIN indicate the base engine. An odd number (3,5,7) indicate a 6 cylinder and an even number 4,6,8 always indicate a V8.

This only for base engines for that model, optional engines are not coded. Also the trim tag may not show the same style number as the VIN. For example the vin might be 13537.. while the Body Tag might be 13637. This is because Fisher Body did not need to code the engine and often set it to V8 style as that was the dominant engine choice. The VIN always determines the base engine, never the body (cowl) tag.

Sorry I did not respond earlier, for some reason most time I got to post a message IE6 crashes and it only does it on this site. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why. This is the first time in a week I got this far and like in the past its may crash when I hit "Submit". (fingers crossed)
